Členy majú v angličtine široké použitie. Existuje veľa pravidiel a mnoho výnimiek. Zameriame sa na jedno z kľúčových použití – geografické názvy. Načrtneme preto zložitú tému – členy so štátmi, kontinentmi, ulicami, pohoriami, jazerami a ďalšími geografickými názvami.

Členy so štátmi, kontinentmi – bez člena
Continents: Africa, Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Antarctica, Australia sú všetky bez člena.
States and countries väčšina je bez člena: Slovakia, Hungary, Chile, Belgium, California…
Tiež názvy ostrovov v jednotnom čísle: Corsica, Greenland, Tasmania a i.
Výnimky: názvy krajín, ktoré obsahujú slová republic, kingdom, state… sa používajú s určitým členom: the United Kingdom, the United States of America, the Czech Republic…
Tiež krajiny v množnom čísle: the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands.
Mestá, ulice, jazerá – bez člena
S mestami sa všeobecne členy nepoužívajú: Bratislava, New York, Washington D. C., Prague, Belfast… Výnimiek je naozaj málo. Ulice sú tiež bez člena: Oxford Street, Pall Mall, Abbey Road. Iba jednotlivé výnimky používajú člen. Patria sem tiež námestia, napr. Times Square, Red Square.
Jazerá tiež bez člena: Lake Baikal (Jazero Bajkal), Lake Victoria (Viktóriino jazero), Lake Tanganyika (Tanganika) atď.
Výnimky: the Hague (Haag), the Vatican City, the Villages (na Floride), the City of London (štvrť v Londýne)…
The city of… je väzba, ktorá vždy obsahuje určitý člen.
Výnimky s ulicami: The Strand, The Mall. Plus pomenovanie hlavnej ulice the high street, the main street.
Výnimky s jazerami: the Dead Sea (Mŕtve more), the Caspian Sea (Kaspické more), the Great Lakes (Veľké jazerá Severnej Ameriky).
Geografické názvy s určitým členom THE
Viaceré geografické názvy používame s určitým členom the. Patria sem najmä oceány, moria, rieky, púšte a pohoria. Neurčitý člen s geografickými názvami nezvykneme používať.
Moria, oceány, rieky
Všetky oceány, moria, rieky a ďalšie názvy vôd ako prieplavy, zálivy, morské prúdy používajú určitý člen. Pri jazerách je to komplikovanejšie.
Moria: the Mediterranean Sea (Stredozemné more), the Red Sea (Červené more), the Adriatic Sea (Jadranské more) a i.
Oceány: the Atlantic (Atlantik), the Pacific (Tichý oceán), the Indian Ocean (Indický oceán), the Arctic Ocean (Severný ľadový oceán), the Southern Ocean (Južný oceán).
Rieky: the Nile (Níl), the Amazon (Amazonka), the Colorado River (rieka Colorado), the Danube (Dunaj), the river Thames (rieka Temža)…
Prieplavy, prielivy, zálivy, morské prúdy (the Suez Canal – Suezský prieplav, the Gulf Stream – Golfský prúd, the Gulf of Mexico – Mexický záliv).
Púšte
The Sahara (Sahara), the Gobi Desert (púšť Gobi), the Kalahari Desert (púšť Kalahari) a rôzne ďalšie používajú určitý člen.
Ostrovy v množnom čísle
Názvy ostrovov v množnom čísle používame s určitým členom, napr. The Bahamas (Bahamy), the Maldives (Maldivy), the Canary Islands (Kanárske ostrovy), the Cayman Islands (Kajmanské ostrovy)… Ale ostrovy v jednotnom čísle sú bez člena: Bali, Hawaii, Madagascar, Mallorca, Corfu….
Pohoria a vrchy
Názvy pohorí sa obvykle spájajú s členom: the Alps (Alpy), the Himalayas (Himaláje), the Andes (Andy)… Vrchy sa však väčšinou používajú bez člena: Mount Everest, Mont Blanc…
Výnimka: the Matterhorn (Alpy).
Rovník, póly
Aj rovník, aj zemské póly vždy s určitým členom the: the Equator, the North Pole, the South Pole.
