End 🔊 /end/ je jednoduché slovíčko, ktoré znamená koniec. Môžu sa s ním spájať rôzne predložky, no dve patria medzi najčastejšie. In the end (nakoniec) a at the end (na konci). Hoci sa prekladajú podobne, nemajú ten istý význam, preto ich nemôžeme používať rovnako.

Predložková fráza at the end of something vyjadruje reálny koniec niečoho. Na konci ulice (at the end of the street), na konci filmu (at the end of the movie), na konci mesiaca (at the end of the month) a pod.

At the end of používame pre koniec miesta, času alebo textu (at the end of the road, at the end of the month, at the end of the book). On the end of je zriedkavé a používa sa najmä vtedy, keď je niečo fyzicky umiestnené alebo pripevnené na konci predmetu (a hook on the end of a rope).
In the end: nakoniec
In the end znamená nakoniec. Používa sa v prenesenom význame. Premýšľame nad niečím, rozhodujeme sa a nakoniec dôjdeme k niečomu. Túto predložkovú väzbu použijeme teda vtedy, ak sa niečo udeje po dlhšom časovom období, po premýšľaní a rozhodovaní. Vyjadruje dôsledok uvažovania alebo výsledok nejakých udalostí.

Pozor – s in the end nepoužívame predložku of:
He decided to quit his job in the end of the day. ❌
Správne by malo byť: He decided to quit his job at the end of the day. ✅Väzba in the end nenaznačuje fyzickú pozíciu, teda spojenie in the end of something ❌ je nesprávne.

Príklad na porovnanie
(A) Mark signed the letter in the end.
(B) Mark signed the letter at the end.
Vo vete (A) Marek možno uvažoval, rozmýšľal, či podpísať, alebo nepodpísať ten list. Ale nakoniec ho podpísal. Vo vete (B) sa Marek podpísal na konci listu. Nie v strede ani na začiatku, ale na úplnom spodku strany.
Ak uvažujeme medzi in the end a at the end, vyberieme si: in the end pre výsledok udalostí, at the end pre skutočný koniec nejakého miesta/času.
