Anglické spojky (conjunctions)

Z hľadiska slovných druhov v angličtine, spojky nie sú vyhľadávacie terno. Existujú, používame ich, ale nejako špeciálne sa im nevenujeme. Dobré je však vedieť aspoň základné info. Sú užitočné na spájanie myšlienok a vyjadrovanie vzťahov medzi vetami, pretože nie každá myšlienka má tú istú dôležitosť.

Paul bought groceries, but he left them at the shop.

Spojky spájajú vety, frázy alebo slová.

• Paul likes tea and coffee.
• Paul likes tea and hates coffee.
• Paul likes tea, and he drinks it very often.

Druhy spojok

1. Coordinating conjunctions: priraďovacie spojky. Spájajú vety s rovnakou dôležitosťou. Vzniká priraďovacie súvetie.
   and, but, so, yet…
2. Subordinating conjunctions: podraďovacie spojky. Spájajú vety, ktoré nie sú rovnocenné. Vzniká súvetie s hlavnou vetou a vedľajšou vetou.
   if, because, until, while, although, before, after…
3. Correlative conjunctions: párové spojky. Používajú sa v určitých pároch, dopĺňajú význam jedna druhej.
   neither…nor, both…and, either…or, not only…but also
4. Conjunctive adverbs: príslovky, ktoré tiež spájajú myšlienky. Ale nie sú to ozajstné spojky.  
   however (avšak), therefore (preto), otherwise (inak)…

Najpoužívanejšie anglické spojky

and	a	Paul likes novels and magazines.
or	alebo	Paul likes reading books or magazines in his free time.
but	ale	Paul is not reading, but he is sleeping.
if	ak	Paul will read a book if he has enough time.
that	že	Paul often says that he likes reading books.
because	pretože, lebo	Paul reads books because he finds it relaxing.
as	ako, keďže, keď	As Paul loves reading, he buys a new book every week.
than	než	Paul reads more than he watches TV.
after	potom, čo	After Paul finished the book, he felt a bit sad.
before	predtým, než	Paul always makes a cup of tea before he starts reading.
so	tak, takže	The book is good, so Paul keeps reading it.
until	až kým	Paul will read until he falls asleep.
although	hoci, aj keď	Although Paul has 100 books, he says he has nothing to read.

Niektoré z týchto slov majú viaceré funkcie/významy. Napríklad before a after nie sú len spojky, ale aj príslovky:

• after dinner – po večeri (príslovka),
• after he had dinner – potom, čo mal večeru (spojka).
